Dr Paul A Tichauer FCIArb, MA (Oxon), PhD (MIT)

 

 

Arbitration Experience

 

Founding Chair of the Canada Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Dr. Tichauer's arbitral appointments include sitting as Sole Arbitrator with the International Court of Arbitration of the ICC in Paris for a complex multi-party dispute concerning the failure of an aircraft jet engine, as Sole Arbitrator with ICDR-Canada  and as a Public Arbitrator with FINRA – the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority in the USA. 

 

In 2022, Dr. Tichauer received the CIArb Canada Award for Distinguished Service in Canadian Arbitration. He is Vice President of the Standing Committee of ICC's International Center for ADR in Paris and was Founding Co-Chair of the annual CanArbWeek Conference.  In 2023, Paul was a member of the Task Force charged with recommending updates to the IBA Conflict Guidelines. In addition, Paul was the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators' representative at the UNCITRAL Commission Working Group lll on ISDS Reform. He is a member of ICC Canada's Arbitration Committee, of the ADR Institute of Canada, of the Toronto Commercial Arbitration Society and is roster arbitrator with VanIAC, FINRA & ICDR Canada. 

Dr. Tichauer has served as an arbitration tutor with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrator's Advanced Route to Fellowship programs in Vancouver, New York City and Toronto. He was also co-chair of CIArb Canada's Annual Arbitration Symposia in Toronto in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

 

Dr. Tichauer has participated frequently as an Arbitrator and a Tribunal Chair at Vis Moot Competitions in Vienna and Hong Kong as well as a Judge at the ICC Mediation Competitions in Paris. In addition, Dr. Tichauer has spoken about arbitration at the Canadian Conference of Metallurgists and about ICC Dispute Boards and Experts at the DRBF Conference in Washington.

Education and Training

 

A Rhodes Scholar, Dr. Tichauer has a B. Eng. (Metallurgy) from McGill University, an MA (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) from Oxford University, a PhD (Metallurgy) from MIT with a thesis on Extractive Metallurgy, and an MBA with Distinction (Finance) from Pace University.

 

A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb), Dr. Tichauer successfully completed the Diploma Program in International Commercial Arbitration offered by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators at Oxford University as well as both ADR and Advanced ADR training in mediation with Stitt Feld Handy in Toronto.

Commercial Experience

 

Dr. Tichauer has held numerous senior executive positions with a wide array of companies in Canada, the United States and Europe. Most recently, he was President of the Langen Packaging Group, a global supplier of highly automated packaging machinery and systems based in Toronto and The Netherlands.

Dr. Tichauer has been a board member of a number of Canadian companies and non-profit organizations as well as an Investment Committee member for several private equity funds. In addition, he has mentored more than 60 CEOs and Managing Directors on a confidential, one-to-one basis from a diverse cross-section of professional service firms, businesses, industries and non-profit institutions and organizations.

A skilled business executive, engineer, and scientist, Dr. Tichauer brings in-depth understanding of the commercial, financial, technical, human resource and IP aspects of commerce and industry. As a consequence of his significant international experience he has developed a fine appreciation and sensitivity to the nuances that attend disputes involving different languages and cultures.

Based in Toronto, Dr. Tichauer is a Canadian citizen by birth and a German citizen by heritage.
